CONDITIONAL SENTENCE
Type I
Time : Future
Situation : Possible(jika syarat/kondisi tertentu terpenuhi)
A. Form:
{Subject + Modal+V1 / Be1(Simple form)} IF {Subject + Simple Present }
atau
IF {Subject + Simple Present },{Subject + Modal+V1 / Be1(Simple form)}
Example:
1. I will buy a new car IF I have money
2. IF I have money,I will buy a new car
B. Form:
{ Subject + Simple Present } IF { Subject + Simple Present }
atau
IF { Subject + Simple Present},{ Subject + Simple Present }
Example:
1. John usually walks to shcool IF he has enough time.
2. IF he has enough time, John usually walks to shcool
C. Form:
IF { Subject + Simple Present},Command form
Atau
Command form IF { Subject + Simple Present}
Example:
1. IF you go to the post office,please mail this letter for me!
2. Please mail this letter for me, IF you go to the post office
Type II
Time : Now
Situation : Unreal Present ( Pengandaian ini menyatakan sesuatu yang bertentangan denngan apa yang ada/ yang terjadi sekarang.)
Form:
{Subject + Modal Past+V1 / Be1(Simple form)} IF {subject + simple past}
atau
IF {subject + simple past},{Subject + Modal Past+V1 / Be1(Simple form)}
Example:
1. IF I had time,I would go to the beach with you this weekend
FACT : I don’t have time thus I can’t go wiyh you this weekend.
2. He would tell you about it IF he were here
FACT : He doesn’t tell you about it because he is not here
3. IF I have enough time now,I would write to my parents
FACT:I do not have enough time now,so I do not write to my parents
4. He would not come to your party IF you didn’t invite him
FACT : He will come to your party because you invite him
Type III
Time : Past
Situation : Unreal Past(Pengandaian ini menyatakanesuatu yang bertentangan dengan apa yang telah terjadi/lampau)
Form:
IF subject + Past perfect,subject + Modal Past + have + V3/been
• atau
Subject + Modal Past + have + V3/been IF subject + Past perfect
example:
1. You wouldn’t have won IF I had not helped you
FACT : You won because I helped you
2. IF we had known you were there,we would have written you a letter.
FACT : We didn’t knew you that you were there so I didn’t write you a letter
3. IF you had told me about the problem,I would have helped you
FACT : I didn’t helped you because you didn’t tell you the problem
4. I would have got wet yesterday IF I had remembered to take umbrella with me yesterday
FACT : I got wet,because I did’t remembered to take umbrella with me yesterday
Modal : will,can,may,must,shall
Modal Past : would,should,might,could
Note:
In writing conditional sentences,we may put the”IF clause”before the “RESULTS clause”and vice versa.However, we must put comma(,) at the end of the “RESULTS clause”.
Also the meaning of the FACT must be on the contrary with the conditional sentences.So if the conditional sentences is in positive form,the fact will be in negative one and vice versa.
